Confirmed: Sony Rolly is a digital audio player

4 09 2007

Now one thing about Sony Rolly is finally certain - it is a digital audio player. This information was published on the Official Sony Rolly Blog, which does not really leave room for doubt anymore. The blog also claims that Rolly will have only one button, which is used forplay/stop functions of the device.

Also, the reporters at the talked to some Sony high level executive, who told them, that Rolly is “a digital media player designed to extend the function of a Walkman-type device - to create a new category. Think of it as a music-focused Wii on wheels”

Sounds extremely interesting, I would say!

Sony Isn’t saying anything about newly surfaced Rolly video and photo

In spite of the extremely authentic looking video and a real looking photograph of Sony Rolly robot, which appeared on Engadget blog a few days ago, Sony is not willing to comment the newly surfaced material in any manner. Sylvia Shin from Sony Europe’s Corporate communications would not confirm or deny the existence of such device, while the matter was enquired by an Engadget reporter.

So, we really can’t do anything but sit and wait until further information surfaces. I suppose that the forthcoming Sony Rolly Party held on the 10th of September in Japan will bring more light on the matter the latest.

Sony Rolly in action!

Sony Rolly dancing robot revealed

Yesterday Sony finally released a picture and a video displaying what Sony Rolly is all about (well, at least you see what the the cool stuff what Rolly does to beat of music). Rolly is a small flashing robot on two wheels, that “dances” to the rythm of music. What remains a mystery is, whether the Rolly actually plays the music itself, or if it only responses to it. My bet is, that it also plays the music itself through its built-in speakers. Also, would be interesting to know about the size of this grooving thing. Anyway you can see the tiny robot fella in action on the commercial video below.

What ever features the Rolly will eventually have, the little “guy” appears to be an extremely cool gadget as it is! As soon as we know more, we will also post it up here - so be sure to stay tuned! (If you want to be sure to stay up to date, you can always subscribe to the Rolly.tv RSS feed!)

Sony has a history of designing egg-shaped things

Sony has a past of designing egg-shaped things

One of the persistent rumours regarding the forthcoming Sony Rolly Walkman music player is, that the player will be egg-shaped.

As a curiousity it seems, that Sony has a history of designing egg-shaped consumer electronics. At least in the mid 90’s Sony introduced a remote controller concept for its audio-receiver lineup. The main idea behind this remote was, that some of the features of the receiver could be controlled by waving the remote. Oh yeah, did I remember to mention, that also Sony Rolly MP3 player is supposed to be equipped with motion sensor?

Well why not - egg is a nice and organic shape after all!

Sony has launched a teaser campaign site for Rolly

Sony has launched a teaser campaign site for Rolly

Sony Has released today a teaser site of the forthcoming Rolly music player. At the teaser site you can look through rather abstract videos, which supposedly portray the character of the forthcoming new device.

If you prefer Youtube to the rather heavy Flash-based teaser-page, you can find the videoclips uploaded to the Youtube here

The “keywords” for the concept are listed on the site are as follows: abstraction, peace, small, motion, chill, lucky, shuffle, music, open, communication, style, chill, peace, share music, kurukuru, communication. As for the moment, we can only guess the meaning behind these words. At least it seems, that Sony is really aiming for something original with this one.

Unfortunately the teaser site, namer Rolly-Show does not give any specific information about what Rolly actually is, so we will still have to rely on the existing rumours on that. At the teaser site Sony is also marketing a “Rolly party”, which will be held in Japan on the September 10th. I would guess, that the actual device will be launched by this date as well.
